How Parents Can Help Their Kids Land Their 1st Job?

in Jan 18, 2023

If you are a parent with a grown child, who has completed college but still lives at home with no job prospects this is written for you.

Let me start with my qualifications to write this insightful content. I started dating single moms, when I was in college; I have 30 years experience seeing what works when moms take charge and lead their kids with compassion, purpose driven values, and restrain. You got to be ready to be tough on your kid...if not they will never be ready to face the realities of life; and grow up (or move out of the house).

I came to the US when I was 12, as an immigrant I had to learn a new language for the third time in my young life. I am ADD/ Dyslexic with a slew of other social problems (a great story). And I had a mom who never allowed the experts tell her; "your child has to many obstacles to overcome and will never adjust!"

I have been in the recruiting industry for close to 27 years, and I have been running my own recruiting agency for the past 25 years (Recruiting for Good). I know what it takes to land a sweet job...and build a successful career regardless of your social economic or personal struggles.

Its Now or Never

  1. Have a realistic game plan for your child to actively participate in their job search (give them 12 months from the time they graduate to land a job).
  2. Kids take the time to write their own resume, and everyday commit to submitting their resume to jobs.
  3. Make an agreement to cut off access to credit cards after 3 months; this will incentivize them to continue the process. If not they will revert to doing nothing.
  4. Have a sincere conversation about what they can expect to earn in their first job (if not in Engineering or Tech definitely below $75,000). Once they land the job, they can continue to live at home for a time while they build confidence/and their bank account.
  5. Check-in once in awhile and see how it is going. Be compassionate, and positive.
